Condolence to bereaved at Christmas

Dear Name,

While taking part in our preparations for all the joyous special services and events of the Christmas season, my mind and heart go out to you because I cannot forget this will be your first Christmas without your beloved ________. The grief you are experiencing is hard to bear at any time. At Christmas, it is likely to be wrenching.

Please remember that your church and pastor are sharing your grief. We are with you, available to you, anxious to help lighten your load. According to Matthew's Gospel (1:23), the prophet applies the name EMANU-EL ("God with us") to the little boy who would be born on that first Christmas day. Let this letter be a loving reminder to you that God is with us, especially with those who mourn -- "that they may be comforted" (Matthew 5:4).

Help us, please, to help you find comfort during this season of joy which God has sanctified for us by the gift of the Christ child. May you be filled with faith and hope even in the midst of inescapable grief. This is the prayer of your pastor and friend.

With my prayers,
